Greed, lying, cheating, stealing – these are all sins that are very common in our world today. We see it in the news, on TV. We hear it in our music; we see it in school and in our neighborhoods. How do we pursue salvation with so many influences that pull us away from Jesus? We must remember that Jesus never said that being a disciple was going to be easy. However, He did say that the reward would be eternal. The Gospel talks about “dishonest wealth”. What Luke is talking about is basically the opposite of what Jesus would call “true wealth”; the kingdom of heaven. To obtain “true wealth”, we must seek out a way of life that is in service to others. We must look for ways to be disciples. Most of us, when given the opportunity, usually make good decisions. But, the challenge is not to wait for the opportunities, but seek out ways to live as disciples. Go out on the limb and talk to the nerd, or geek. Invite the unpopular students to sit at the same table as the popular students. There are always ways to be a disciple, they’re just challenging.
