WELLNESS TIP OF THE WEEK PICNICS are fun and summer is the perfect time to enjoy this popular outside activity. However, the summer heat brings concern of SAFETY with food. The following are some practical suggestions for food safety this summer.- Plan ahead
- Thaw meat in refrigerator or microwave
- Pack hand sanitizer
- Pack paper towels
- Pack zip-close bags and covered containers
- Cook foods safely
- Use a meat thermometer
- Cook red meat to 160 degrees
- Cook poultry to 180 degrees
- Cook fish until it flakes with a fork
- Boil eggs so that yokes are firm
- Keep bacteria out of the food
- Wash hands frequently
- Use paper towels
- Use plastic cutting boards
- Wash cutting boards and countertops
- Keep cold foods cold
- Keep hot foods hot
- Marinate meat in refrigerator
- Discard marinades when finished
- Wash fruits and vegetables to remove dirt and mold
- Wash melons before cutting
- General picnic safety
- Pack the cooler full, the temperature will be maintained better
- Pack raw meat so juices do not leak
- Eat deli foods within several hours of purchase
- Keep meat, eggs, and dairy foods from sitting out
