“I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.”
We proclaim these words each time we recite the Nicene Creed at Mass. We also pray, “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.” So who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is the shared love of God the Father and Jesus the Son pouring out upon those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ, been baptized and confirmed. The Spirit comes as divine light, to comfort us, strengthen us, and guide us toward goodness and trust in God. The Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity, also called the Paraclete or Advocate.
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Galatians 5:22
Today is Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the church and the end of the Easter season . We wear red liturgically to recall the fire of the Spirit. God sent the Holy Spirit to Jesus’ apostles 50 days after Jesus rose from the dead to empower them to go out into the world and spread the good news of Jesus’ resurrection and salvation.
We are Jesus’ disciples now and our mission is to spread the same good news by our lives, actions and words. We are chosen and called to keep the church alive!
